Greece



Greece is situated in the the southern part of Europe. The size of our country is one hundred and thirty two thousand square kilometers and its population is about eleven million people. The capital of Greece is Athens. It's one of the world's most ancient cities with its record history spanning around three thousand and four hundred years.
Classical Athens was a centre of Arts and Philosophy and the birth place of Democracy. In the ancient times many monuments were built. The most important of them is Acropolis with the temple of Parthenon. Greece is the place where the classical Culture was born along with Democracy, the Olympic games, the Theatre (both tragedy and comedy), as well as the major principles of Mathematics, Science, Philosophy, Historiography and Political Science. The first Olympic games took place in 996 B.C. Modern Olympic games were held in 2004.
Famous ancient Greeks were Plato, Socrates,Aristotle, Pericles, Dimocritus, Pithagoras and Archimedes who contributed to humanity a great deal in the fields of Literature, Poetry, Philosophy, Mathematics, Arts, Politics and Civilization in general.
Famous contemporary Greeks are Maria Kallas the greatest soprano of the 20th century, Mikis Theodorakis the musician, Odysseas Elytis and George Seferis who both got the Nobel Prize in Literature, Dominicos Theotokopoulos world wide known as El Greco, George Papanikolaou the doctor who invented the pap-test for women and many others.
In Greece we are very fond of traditional dancing, traditional food and sweets. Our most popular food is the famous greek moussaka which is made with potatoes, beef, eggplants and béchamel.
